I’ve been planning to blog for some time, but didn’t really know where or how to start. Yesterday, I read an article about something that I’m so passionate about, it gave me the impetus to start.
The Federal Minister for Health Greg Hunt is considering a proposal to make it compulsory for all children to be weighed and measured, to “tackle obesity”. You can read the article here.
That’s right. All children to be weighed and measured. However, we know body shaming doesn’t work. What will this proposal do to our children? It will lower resilience, lower well-being, lower self-esteem, and increase bullying. The exact opposite of what we want. This won’t just affect children who are overweight. It will affect ALL children who are deemed not “normal” (whatever that is). It associates physical appearance with good/bad.
I have heard hundreds of stories from adults who are still suffering now from childhood body shaming, and from parents whose children are suffering today.
Instead, our government should be making fresh foods more affordable, and promoting programs that teach time poor adults how to cook quick, nutritious food and how to incorporate physical exercise into everyday routines.
What can you do to help stop this ridiculous proposal? If you’re a parent, please express your outrage at your child’s school. If you’re not a parent, please lobby your local school. I encourage everyone to sign the petition because our children deserve better.
